John Ellis is easily one of the five most insightful and wired-in political minds I have ever met or read. — Charlie Cook, founder of The Cook Political Report.
(‘Night Owls”. Episode #57. Joe Klein and John Ellis, Recorded 19 February 2025)
Earlier this week, Joe wrote a smart piece entitled “World Week.” (Joe writes smart pieces again and again, which you can find at his Substack newsletter ‘Sanity Clause.’). The sub-head to “World Week” was "What on earth is Trump doing?”
So we started with that question and then talked about other things: the German elections, Elon Musk, the Tech Bros’ capture of the Trump administration, Trump’s poll numbers, dead-in-the-water Democrats. It’s what is known in the trade as “a wide-ranging discussion.”
Next week, we’ll be interviewing Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton (R) about his new book: “Seven Things You Can’t Say About China.” That too should be a “wide-ranging discussion.”
We’ll post it next weekend.
P.S.: You can listen to this podcast and the other 56 ‘Night Owls’ podcasts on all of the major platforms (Apple, Amazon, Spotify, et alia).
If you want something that makes you laugh, I recommend this one, entitled ‘Paper of Wreckage’. It’s a wide-ranging discussion (!) with Susan Mulcahy about her oral history of The New York Post.
