1. The most important country in the European Union is Germany. The best analysis of German politics in the English language (that I know of) is posted at Eurointelligence, a newsletter founded and edited by Wolfgang Munchau. Mr. Munchau was a Financial Times columnist from 2003 until 2020 and the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Financial Times Deutschland. His German-language books include the award-winning Vorbeben from 2006, in which he predicted the global financial crisis.
Eurointelligence is distributed at 3am Eastern Time on weekdays and is well worth the price. (It costs ~$550 per annum). What follows is a lengthy excerpt from his most recent column on German politics.
