Some of our more caustic subscribers have suggested that News Items be re-named “The China Daily News” or “The Evergrande Daily Cryer”, because we devote “too much” space to what is happening in China. We devote a lot of space to what is happening in China because it’s the most important geopolitical story of this century (so far).
With that in mind, we thought it would be a good idea to talk to David Barboza. David was the Shanghai Bureau Chief for The New York Times for eight years (2004-2012). After a while, he left The Times and co-founded The Wire Digital, Inc.
The Wire Digital is a New York-based news and data platform focused on China and global supply chains. It consists of a digital weekly news magazine, called The Wire China, and a data and software analytics platform named WireScreen.
David himself has one of those impossibly impressive resumes which you can read by clicking here. Over the course of his journalistic career, he’s won two Pulitzer Prizes, one Polk Award, and produced or helped produce some truly extraordinary reports on how business and finance works in China.
Just before Christmas, I spoke with David for about 90 minutes. That’s too long for one episode of a podcast, so we’ve broken it up into four episodes.
Episode #1 is about The Wire Digital. A quick liner note for Episode #1 would be: Bloomberg for China.
